Earthquake Proof Testing

Recently, we had an earthquake, and it was an invigorating and interesting experience!  The quake was actually centered around 90 miles from us, but we definitely felt it here.

It was minor at 5.8 Richter scale, with no reported injuries and causing very little damage, so it wasn’t too big of a deal.  But there were some valuable lessons to be gained.

The earthquake happened at night (around 12:30 am), and it was actually during a lightning storm.  At almost the exact same time that the earthquake hit, a very bright stroke of lightning streaked across the sky.  And the thunder followed immediately.  Then things started shaking!

So, I actually associated the noise and movement of my house with the thunder from that lightning.  Or, I thought it could be a tornado, or maybe an electric transformer explosion.

It wasn’t until the next day that I found it was definitely an earthquake.  Even this minor earthquake was quite loud at the beginning, as my house was creaking in ways it never had before.

The lesson here is that without some solid evidence based on scientific procedures and objectivity, coincidences and other entirely separate occurrences can mask the true cause of something.

That’s why we are in the testing business!  Our focus is to find out the scientific truth through verifiable testing.  Sometimes the truth is helpful and positive.  Sometimes, it’s the opposite of what the client wants to hear.  But, the truth must be discovered.  That’s our job.
