I was recently camping with my family near a mountain lake, called Georgetown Lake in Southwest Montana.
There had been a great deal of rain in the previous weeks, and then a good dose of sun and heat. So the grass had grown very fast and long in a short amount of time. And that long grass was VERY attractive to swarms and armadas of flying bugs!
… there were these small midge type gnat bugs (I don’t know their exact species, ha), but they didn’t bite, although they did annoy …
… there were typical black flies, big and small, and luckily it was too early in the season for these guys to be biting ..
… and then of course there were some mosquitos. And they were hungry.
Now, it wasn’t all mosquitos. In fact, doing the numbers, mosquitos were in the minority. For every 5 bugs that we swatted away, probably 1 was a mosquito. It was a numbers game — you had to go to lot of effort in order to just swat 1 mosquito! And because of the sheer numbers, the mosquitos still made away with gallons of our blood!
It was just a numbers game.
On the positive side, the bats woke up around 10:30pm, and put on quite an aerial show as they swooped all around, eating the smorgassboard of bugs. So, we had to wait awhile, and swat a lot of bugs, but at night there was a nice “air show” for our efforts!
This reminds me of metals and minerals testing.
It can be a numbers game, too.
Sometimes it takes multiple samples, from a variety of locations in order to find the right concentrations and quality of metals and minerals. You have to “swat” plenty of times to get these “mosquitos” too.
