I’m bolting out of work early today and taking my kids to a museum. Not just any old museum.
This is the old state prison in a town called Deer Lodge. They also created an old car museum on the site as well. Yes, I know, the two don’t fit.
Anyway, the prison looks like a castle.
It has an outer stone wall made of gray stone, with towers. The walls were wide enough that guards would walk the perimeter.
There is an inner fortress, built of red brick. It has towers as well.
It was originally built and placed into service in 1871, when Montana was still a territory.
The town actually grew around the prison. It was closed in the 1970s and the prisoners moved to a new prison outside of town.
The prison still stands, and as I said they made a museum out of it.
Kind of a neat thing to go see on a chilly Montana fall day.
Seeing a prison also builds a healthy respect for the law in kids as well. I know it did for me. I toured the prison with my grandpa when I was a kid.
Still have those memories.
So the idea of the old prison turned museum got me thinking.
