But then again, no other labs are “certified” by the American Petroleum Institute (API) when it comes to frac sand, drilling grade barite, drilling bentonite, and all other API testing specs.
Not even the “big boys” in the oil and gas testing business.
Why is that?
A prospective client recently asked this common question regarding certification.
Here is her question and my answer:

Q: Hi Brandon, Your lab is certified right? The data we get we can sell
to large oil and gas companies?
Someone told me to ask.
A: API does not certify any lab to perform testing on barite (or anything else, for that matter).
Here is what I have done to make sure my lab provides superb testing services for drilling grade barite.
1. Hired one of the best chemists in the region to perform testing on the barite. Here is her laboratory (which has multiple certifications and qualification in areas where they are required): http://mse-ta.com/page/services.html#lab
2. Had this chemist certified by testing some barite from a mine against a laboratory calibration barite in a blind test, ensuring that our test procedures are accurate.
3. I follow ISO Standard 17025 “Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories”

So there you have it — API doesn’t certify anyone for testing. On anything.
Now, in the frac sand testing bidness, it’s pretty clear that Stimlab and Proptester results are accepted by most of the service companies that purchase frac sand.
It’s not my intention to pretend that everyone will “accept” my frac sand testing results (even though I have been verified by clients to have results very close to Stimlab’s when the same sand was tested by their lab and mine).
I don’t take it personnally. It’s just bidness.
Where I have an advantage over these expensive big players is that my lab is small.
Nimble.
With low overhead.
Personalized service for my clients.
