I have been trying to listen to quality podcasts lately, and I set up my truck radio to be able to play episodes through bluetooth as I drive.
Although we don’t have a lot of traffic here in Butte, America, sometimes it’s nice to be able to listen to something other than music when driving around.
Anyway, when browsing through podcasts, trying to find something to listen to, I came across a “radio drama” called Hyacinth Disaster. It’s basically a modern version of the old school radio dramas like Dragnet and Superman and Your’s Truly, Johnny Dollar (which is my all time favorite old radio show!).
The premise of the Hyacinth Disaster show, which is 7 episodes long, is that in the year 2159 there is lots of asteroid mining for metals and minerals. And it’s kinda like the wild west out in the asteroid belts between Mars and Jupiter.
The story picks up with the crew of a contractor mining vessel (The Hyacinth), which usually mines for one mining company. One of their colleague’s ships has been held hostage for ransom by another mining company, because they were mining in their territory.
The Hyacinth has decided to do some prospecting on their own, in order to find a high value asteroid and then use that as a bargaining chip to free their friends.
I won’t spoil anything here, but I want to talk about one thing that’s kinda interesting during the show.
They use a piece of equipment called a “squealer” to analyze the asteroid with high energy, and determine the quantity of metals and minerals found in it.
** Slight spoiler ** they find this asteroid to be off the charts with its treasure of metals and minerals!
Anyway, I thought the idea of the squealer was something interesting, and maybe it’s a piece of equipment that we should develop in the lab, to prepare for asteroid minerals and metals testing someday!
In the meantime, though, you can already hire us to test pretty much any piece of ore for its minerals and metals content. And, our expert colleagues can help determine the economic feasibility of the treasure in your sample.
We have 2 most worthy colleagues that can do SEM testing and XRD testing, in order to help you determine how valuable your ore might be.
We can even test your asteroid ore sample, if you have one! Of course, if we unleash some sort of space germ, that could be bad news for the future of the lab…
… but, we are willing to take that risk for our clients! :^)
