Doing the Dishes of Testing

So, I kinda like taking care of the dishes in my home.

I know, some of you may criticize me, and say “that’s not men’s work!”  Ha

I don’t care!  I really like doing the dishes.  And I will tell you why …

(1) The dishes are a necessary chore for a family!  The household will simply break down if the dishes don’t get washed!  The counter and both sinks will pile high with dirty dishes and pots and pans, and meals and snacks will come to a grinding halt, resulting in unhappy kids and family.  Someone’s gotta do the dishes!

(2) You work with your hands!  Sometimes as lab manager it seems like I rarely get to work my hands and actually get something done!  Balancing the work in the lab with personnel assignments usually means that most of the testing is done by our internal staff.  Doing the dishes means that I have that feeling of worth that comes from working with my hands and seeing the results.

(3) It’s satisfying service work for my family!  We are so separated from all the manual work that our ancestors did, since everything is so automated and machine driven anymore.  I read somewhere that between the heating system, oven, dishwasher, clothes washer, car, lawn mower, and all the other joys of modern life, we can get the work of like 5 or 6 employees done through our home machines!  It’s good for my soul to humbly serve my family through SOME sort of manual labor, since long gone are the days of milking cows, chopping firewood, and cutting meat!

So, that’s why I like doing the dishes for my family.

Now, in the lab, we have some “menial” work that must be done in order to prepare a sample for testing.  And I’m talking here about washing and drying for sand samples, crushing ores for testing, and scrubbing sand if its clustered.  In some cases we have to wash and scrub and dry, and then repeat the process to make sure we properly prepared the material.

This type of work might be manual, and boring, but it’s essential for testing.

So send us your clustered sand for washing and testing, your ore for crushing and testing …

… but please don’t send us your dirty dishes!  I already have enough of those to do!
