There are quite a few vacant buildings here in Butte, America.
Apparently there were around a hundred thousand people that lived up here on the mining hill around the year 1900. Now there are around 30,000 and the population is spread across a much larger geographic area. So, it makes sense that there are more buildings than necessary in uptown Butte.
The problem is, some of the windows have been broken or fallen out, and the pigeons find the way in. And you know what pigeons can do in a vacant building!
Unfortunately, if someone then goes to purchase one of these buildings and put some money into them, they have to deal with the pigeon problem first.
It would do a lot of good if some of these building owners would take the time to pigeon proof their buildings!
Just board up open windows or replace the windows and the problem would be solved.
In the lab business, there can be lots of “pigeons” that can get into the testing process, if you’re not careful.
For instance, in our line of business where we test a lot of sand, sieves can become dirty over time and use, and introduce error into the testing process. The way to remove this source of error is to keep track of how used the sieves are (sand eventually plugs enough holes in the sieve mesh) and order new ones when they start to show initial signs of being dirty.
Another “pigeon” of testing to be aware of is calibration. Even though it’s expensive, we frequently hire a company to come into the lab…
… they check our scales …
… ensure our press gage is properly calibrated …
… and give us proof of calibration, so we can make sure that “pigeon” is not making a mess for us.
