“Rain Man” Testing Techniques

The movie “Rain Man” starring Dennis Hoffman and Tom Cruise opened the eyes of much of the world to a group of people, sometimes referred to as “autistic savants.”

Someone who is an autistic savant can have problems functioning in many areas of life, such as in a job or socially, but they can be extraordinarily brilliant in a certain area, such as mathematics or music.

In Rain Man, Dennis Hoffman’s character was the autistic savant (back then it was called “idiot savant”!) and he wasn’t really able to safely drive, relate to anyone socially, or hold down a job.

He lived in an institution.

Rain Man was ruthlessly devoted to a specific daily schedule.

He had to watch — daily — Judge Wapner on the People’s Court, which led to some hilarious scenes in the movie.

In one scene, a box of toothpicks gets dropped on the ground, and the Rain Man looks at the toothpicks and instantly counts them!

This leads his brother (the Tom Cruise character) to teach his brother how to count cards, so they could make a lot of money in Vegas!

We just gained access to a neat piece of “Rain Man” style testing equipment.

The Camsizer XT is a piece of equipment that can:

* visually test sand particles, by taking photos of them as they fall through an aperture

* the Camsizer can function very similarly to a sieve analysis, by showing what percentage of particles fit certain size ranges

* the Camsizer can also perform sphericity and roundness testing, by visually “inspecting” individual sand grains

* the equipment does a complete count of all the particles in a sample and takes pictures of all of them

* the software for the equipment has great functionality, and can do all sorts of additional analyses on samples by accessing the data collected from the camera

The Camsizer gives us enormous capability to develop specific testing techniques for clients that need to know very specific details about their materials.

This isn’t limited to sand testing only, as the Camsizer can test a variety of materials of varying sizes!
