Hello,
It’s such a nice day here, and the birds are chirping, and the children are singing. So, let’s do some questions and answers
Q1: Do you run frac sand tests with samples sent by courier? How much sample do you need?
A1: Yes, we can test it so long as the sand arrives intact here at the lab. It doesn’t matter where it comes from! We have tested everything from African sand, to sand just down the freeway from the lab. If you are shipping sand from outside the United States, ensure you label it as “sand” and not soil, as soil has very strict requirements to make it into the United States.
We request at least 3 kg (5 lbs) of sand per sample, more if heavy in clays.
Q2: I don’t know what qualifies as frac sand and am not sure of the proper steps for testing.
A2: No fear, sir … we are here to take charge and move out.
In this case, you might consider our initial frac sand testing package, for $950 [note: pricing changes with volume, as well as over time — so check with the lab for current pricing], which will let you know whether or not your sand may have the specs needed to make it into the market as frac sand.
Included in this first round of testing is: (1) washing and drying, which cleans the sand and shows you wash loss; (2) full stack sieve analysis, which shows you the various fractions of sand you have; (3) selection of 1 promising size fraction; (4) sphericity and roundness on that selected fraction, which lets you know whether the sand particle shape is generally appropriate; (5) bulk density, which is required for crush testing; and (6) initial stress crush testing, which gives you a “preview” on whether or not your sand is strong enough to warrant further testing.
Also, you can go to our website, and look at all the specifications for sand there.
Ok, time for 1 more question:
Q3: Can we send raw sand, such as washed concrete sand (ASTM C33) gradation for testing or do we need to prescreen and make the sand fractions that are proposed (40/70 and 70/100)?
A3: You can send us raw sand, or sand that’s been processed any way you see fit. We can work with anything.

So there you go. I recommend you get outside today to breath some of that fresh air, and listen to the birds chirping!
