The Stars Wars philosophy of frac sand testing

Are you a Star Wars fan?

Even if you are not a fan, you’ve probably seen the very first movie…

Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope from 1977.

It has a great final action scene, where the Rebels are attacking the Death Star and trying to get their torpedoes to go into the thermal port.

It’s incredibly dangerous, as the rebels are getting picked off by the Empire’s TIE fighters and the cannons shooting from the surface of the Death Star.

And then, just when you think one rebel might score a hit because he manages to get his torpedo launched…

…it just deflects off the surface.

Then, it’s the young hero Luke Skywalker’s turn in his X-Wing fighter.

As he’s in the canyon of the Death Star, who else shows up to take him out but his father (although he doesn’t know it yet), Darth Vader.

Darth senses the Force with Luke, saying, “the Force is strong with this one.”

As Luke makes his way to the thermal port, he’s under relentless assault.

The surface guns of the Death Star are firing. Darth Vader is firing. It doesn’t look good.

Then, who comes flying in to the rescue, but the “scoundrel” Han Solo in the Millenium Falcon! He takes scoring shots at Vader and the other TIE fighters, and Luke is finally free to fire his torpedo.

Luke lets his torpedo go…

…helps to guide it towards the thermal port using the Force…

…and the Death Star explodes and the good guys are victorious.

Well, finding frac sand is a bit like the Rebel Alliance assault on the Death Star.

Yes, you are the Rebel Alliance in this story.

You start the difficult journey figuring that it’s not very likely that your sand will turn out to be frac sand.

In fact, only a small amount of the sand out there can be used for hydraulic fracturing, anyway.

But, is it worth all the testing to get there? Absolutely.

If you have frac sand, you just might get rich selling it to be used for hydraulic fracturing.

You will have to be like Luke Skywalker, and show courage to get through the adventure.

First there is the basic “go/no-go” testing to be done, such as sieve analysis, and sphericity and roundness testing.

Then, if those tests look promising, additional tests can be performed, like acid solubility testing, turbidity testing, and the crush resistance test.

Does your sand have what it takes to make it to market as frac sand?

You can find out by working with us to test it.
